19th July 2023

We held a follow-up workshop with pupils at Alperton Community School to discuss how their ideas had been incorporated into the proposed community space within the upcoming development. The event was attended by design team members, including Imogen Tyrrell from KMDC, Dominic Drakes from Haworth Tompkins, and Gabriel Abulafia from Redwood Consulting. The event saw around 20 pupils from years 7, 8, and 9, some of whom had previously participated in the previous session on the 11th May 2023.

The team began by providing an update on the progress of the application, followed by an explanation of the structure of the proposed community space. Attendees were then invited to share their views on how the space could be best utilised, with a specific focus on the previous feedback around study spaces and holiday activities.

The students' feedback on the proposed community space was insightful and forward-thinking. For study spaces, they suggested including a mini-library.  They also proposed having quiet spaces, desks with computers, cubicles or booths for focused work, comfortable chairs, and even a café to cater to those studying in the facility.

Regarding holiday activities, the students suggested a range of ideas, including facilities for half-term sports activities, photography classes, board games, and an outdoor cinema to screen films and major sporting events. These suggestions showcased the students' creativity and interest in engaging recreational activities.

The ideas and aspirations shared during the event are set to play a vital role in shaping the proposed community space, ensuring it meets the needs and desires of the community it will serve.

As the development progresses, the design team are committed to incorporating these innovative ideas and fostering a vibrant community space that caters to the needs and interests of the local community. The event has marked an important step towards building a better future for the community, with the involvement of its young minds playing a crucial role in the journey ahead.

The team look forward to continuing to engage with students once the new academic year begins!
